William H. Macy directed Lionel Mark Smith. The Mark Taper Forum rejected the casting and Mamet and Macy moved to a smaller venue. At the Tiffany Theatre, this scene assumed even uglier resonance: a black man stood over a white woman who had charged him with rape, a visual reminder of the horror inherent in racial stereotyping.

Pinter directs Oleanna. Whereas Mamet's badly misconceived production had turned into a comicbook potboiler satirizing Political Correctness in general and sexual harassment charges in particular, Pinter's production uncovered the true heart of the play.

At the ATHE, the panel was chaired by Jerry Dickey of the University of Arizona. All three of the panelists' papers emphasized the ways that Mamet's works reconfigure and encourage reconsideration of traditional notions of "family" and "family drama."
