Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; line-height: 1.27; ">As I prepare to step down from the presidency of the David Mamet Society, I am pleased to report that the Society has elected my successor. Janet Haedicke, of the University of Louisiana, Monroe, and Karen Blansfield, of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. who will replace Chris Hudgins as Vice President and Treasurer. Both are long-time, generous contributors to the work of the Mamet Society. During the last six years, the Society’s growth has been gratifying. We are now truly an international group of scholars whose members span the globe. Palatino-Italic, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; font-style: italic; line-height: 1.27; ">The David Mamet Review Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; line-height: 1.27; ">has continued to expand, as well, and I believe, improve both its quality and its coverage of dramatic productions, films, and books by and about the writer. Its annual bibliography is a valued asset to us all. For this, I am indebted to all those who have contributed to that effort and enthused that so many young scholars have assumed leadership roles in this endeavor.

Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; line-height: 1.27; ">Inevitably, however, as in any growing organization, a number of initiatives I had hoped to accomplish during my presidency have not yet been realized. It had been my hope that the Society’s website would be on-line in early 2000, offering news about productions, inviting reviews, announcing calls for papers/essays, notifying our membership of conferences, and presenting previous issues of the Palatino-Italic, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; font-style: italic; line-height: 1.27; ">Review. Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; line-height: 1.27; ">A number of complications arose earlier this year delaying plans for the website, but our first version is now in service —http://eserver.org/mamet/ —which we will continue to improve in the months which follow. I also had hoped that MLA would notify me of their affirmative vote on our application for allied status, but at this writing I await confirmation. Look for updates from the new president.

Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; line-height: 1.27; ">As always, the work of Palatino-Italic, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; font-style: italic; line-height: 1.27; ">The David Mamet Review Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; line-height: 1.27; ">is a collaborative effort. Chris Hudgins and I are grateful to our book editor, Deborah Geis, performance editor, Janet Haedicke, film editor, Bob Vorlicky, and European editor, Steven Price. I also want to express our appreciation to the reviewers and contributors to this issue of the Palatino-Italic, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; font-style: italic; line-height: 1.27; ">Review Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; line-height: 1.27; ">for your timely and valuable articles and invite the membership to contact the editors if they are interested in contributing to next year’s edition. And I again commend Jan and David Sauer for the marvelous work they do in providing us with the annual bibliography and for their help with our website.

Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; line-height: 1.27; ">The Eighth Annual Meeting of The David Mamet Society at the MLA Convention in Washington, D.C., promises to be another provocative one. Janet Haedicke will chair, Ta(i)ling the Dog: Power, Politics, and Play in the Works of David Mamet Palatino-Italic, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; font-style: italic; line-height: 1.27; ">,” Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; line-height: 1.27; ">which will take place Friday, December 29 at 12:00-1:15 P.M. in Maryland Suite B, Marriot Hotel. Professors Maysa Abou-Yonssef, Harry Bruder and Ira Nadel, will present, respectively, “The Poetics of the Deal: The Prisoner’s Dilemma, Logical Paradox and the Laconian Gaze in David Mamet’s Palatino-Italic, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; font-style: italic; line-height: 1.27; ">Oleanna,” Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; line-height: 1.27; ">David Mamet: Film-acher: Assault on/with Narrative,” and “Parody and Postmodernism in David Mamet’s Palatino-Italic, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; font-style: italic; line-height: 1.27; ">Wilson.” Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; line-height: 1.27; ">As usual, a business meeting for the Board and interested members of the Society will be held the same day as our Special Session, December 29 at 5:15 P.M., this year in Janet Haedicke’s room at the Mariott. An announcement will also be made at our special session. Since we have not yet had word on a change in our status for next year’s convention, please let me know if you are interested in chairing a Special Session for 2001.

Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; line-height: 1.27; ">A final note. My tenure as president of the David Mamet Society has been a richly rewarding experience and brought me into contact with wonderful individuals whose scholarship on David Mamet’s evolving canon continues to stretch the ways in which we approach his work in diverse genres. I especially want to thank my partner in crime, Chris Hudgins, who has redefined the typically thankless job of vice-president, working closely with me on all aspects of planning and communicating with our members. I am honored to have had the opportunity to serve, grateful to hand over the reins to Janet Haedicke, and look forward to working collaboratively with you in my continuing role as editor of the Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; font-style: italic; line-height: 1.27; "> David Mamet Review Palatino-Roman, 'Palatino'; font-size: 11.00pt; line-height: 1.27; ">. I hope to see you in D.C.
